Hi Brian:
With the likes of council members and their support for bylaws quashing potential businesses that "would" come here when we hear that business advertising signage can not be higher than "such and such" , because Council doesn't want Kitimat turning into a down-trodden population center like Vancouver, it's a wonder "anyone" even stays at all. I ask, what kind of hilly-billy mentality is that????

Vancouver, while it definitely has its pitfalls (oh, and while we're at it Mr/Mrs Council Member, have you noticed your very own hoodlums in Kitimat, selling drugs, vandalizing property, and trashing what was your idealistic dream of staying small and quaint, because you refuse to allow Kitimat to grow and prosper for "everyone", not just the "Wallets" in this town?) - is a beautiful city that has "much" to offer - like sea-side venues and viable commercial shops and "booming" bedroom Communities where many people "want" to live, spurring on their economies, not dampening them.

The people that create havoc and problems for the rest of Kitimat are like a Sepsis infection. If you don't treat the condition, cut the decaying parts away, and get clean blood to the surrounding areas soon to help with healing and perhaps some regeneration, the whole system can shut down. Many youth/people hate Kitimat because they see it dying before their eyes and they feel powerless to do anything about it and so in their frustration, they pick at the infected areas it like a scab with their filthy hands, keeping the city in a "toxic state".

Anyone with half a brain knows that if you don't clean things up inject some new blood into Kitimat soon, the whole city "will" die and there will be no-one left to lift it up off its death bed.

Hopefully we can oust those with this brain disease called, and get those that wish to see growth and change in and spur our city's economy on.

I know "I" am getting tired of encouraging people to fight the good fight, when they themselves don't give a rat's hiney if Kitimat survives or goes the way of a ghost-town. I'm from a large Albertan city, why should I care when no one else from here does?

We need a doctor to do some major blood work folks.

See, Sheila, the thing is - the youth are leaving and not returning. The ones that do leave and come back are going out, getting a forestry degree or their trade, and then coming back for a cushy job at Eurocan or Alcan.

What about those of us who are pursuing programming, video game design, robotics, or other technological degrees that really aren't supported in any way, shape, or form by the economy - or even the residents - of Kitimat?

Geeks really are run out of Kitimat with torches and pitchforks simply because we choose not to 'enjoy' hiking up Mount Elizabeth, camping, fishing, or hunting. There's nothing for us here.

Some of us want to see Kitimat as our parents and their parents wanted to see it, but our ideas of what make a place great just don't seem to jive with the views of the majority.

There's nothing we can do.

Hi MamaShrub,
But it is those of us willing to stay and fight the good fight, that need all the help and support we can get. It's easy to just give up...it's a lot harder to fight it out to see some good come of a bad situation.
I believe good things will happen for Kitimat again, it's just a matter of time.
Thanks for the response though,
Sheila

I lived in Kitimat for 8 years. I had 2 children born there. I loved Kitimat. It is a great place to raise small kids...its just you can't support them unless you work at Alcan or Eurocan and it is hard to get on there. I worked 3 jobs while I lived there (all at the same time) and I was making the same amount as welfare. I had to move away and as soon as I did I landed a full time job...away from Kitimat. It is really sad what has happened to that city. Every one really hopes that something will come their way but they also really doubt the reality of it.
I think it is time everyone just faced it. Kitimat once had the potential to be a great city, but now those dreams are floating on some wind that is heading right down the highway.

Sheila,

Didn't notice this response to just recently. I guess there is so sorta loop whole that always companies to write off the off the loss of revenue from the building. As far as the city centre mall goes, yes it was sold approx. 5 months ago (Narland Properties sold the property) I believe it fetched about 3.5 million, but don't quote me on the exact figuire. The article in Western Investor did not say who had purchased the property. I haven't really noticed many changes over the past 5 months, so who knows what the future will hold.

P.S did you read this past wednesday's paper. Bob Coreless is looking into opening another theatre, lets cross our fingers and hope he's serious.

I've never understood this mentality - But it's certainly not one that builds any kind of city, that's for sure. The tax write-off must be worth more than what an annual lease rate would fetch. But at any rate, it shows that these type of business owners are NOT interested in "building" Kitimat or it's economy.

On another note - maybe you can clear this up for me. I thought I had heard that the City Centre Mall had new owners...or was that new "management" only?

Sheila,

Not only do out of town owners leave their buildings to lie in ruins, but they feel they can charge ridiculous lease rates for their buildings.Kitimat is not Vanouver. Wouldn't they rather charge a lower rate and be occupied rather than charge a high rate a be vacant. I don't understand this, however I have heard there is some sort of tax write off. Thank god for Pauline Maitlands progressive management of the city centre mall, or it would all be vacant.

Great ideas Sheila, I have been thinking about a "sea wall" or boardwalk along minette bay and through the Kitimat river estuary. A nice boardwalk to go for a jog or walk, would be nice. Somethin like Seattle's seawall or Vancouver's Stanley park. I think if we got a volunteer group together and got some donations from local industry we could build a boardwalk in phases as a community project. Have you ever seen the one they are constructing in Stewart, B.C? We must be the change we see in the community.

Hey Sheila,

Thanks for your thoughts about the "Nechako Centre." I'm truly concerned about the sale of the Theatre. I attended quite regularly, after living in the city and paying the outrageous prices, I was more than happy to pay bargain prices at the Nechako Theatre. I wonder if we could get a group together to try and promote a new theatre, maybe council would participate? What do you think?
